Walt Disney World in January 2010 – Crowd levels, Special Events, Promotions, Refurbishments, and Ride Closures.

There are some things going on at Walt Disney World in January that you need to know about:                                                                                                           

Crowd Warnings:

1.      Crowds will very heavy through January 3rd as people enjoy their Christmas break at Walt Disney World.   The rest of the month will have low to moderate crowds.    Low crowds mean shorter hours and fewer shows so plan accordingly.  
2.     2010 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend – January 7th – 10th . The Disney marathons are very popular so we’ll see a bit of a surge in the crowds for this weekend.  The marathon events won’t affect the crowds but you will find runners and their families at the resorts and visiting the parks when not involved with the marathon itself.  The Magic Kingdom will see the largest number of visitors.
3.     Fantasmic! (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) –This great show is no longer presented every night.  It will be offered January 1, 2, 3, 7, 10, 14, 16, 17, 21, 22, 24, & 28.  This is a very popular show and we highly recommend it – arrive 60-90 minutes early, if you do not have a Fantasmic! Dinner package.  Disney may add a second, later performance on certain evenings around New Years  – if they do, the later showing of Fantasmic! will always be less crowded than the earlier one   Warning: When there are limited performances, you know Disney’s Hollywood Studios is going to be busier on days featuring a Fantasmic! show.  Afternoons will be especially busy as those with Park Hopper tickets come over to see the show.  A good touring plan will help you manage this.   Warning:  This show  is excellent but it does feature villains for a good 8-10 minutes.  The scene is fairly intense and can be frightening to small children.
4.     SpectroMagic Parade (Magic Kingdom) – This wonderful nighttime parade is not offered every night and the Magic Kingdom will be more crowded on days featuring a SpectroMagic Parade.   The SpectroMagic Parade will be presented on January 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 11, 13, 16, 17, 18, 20, 23, 25, 27, 30.    If Disney offers a second evening parade, the later parade will be less crowded than the earlier.
5.     Avoid going to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot New Years Eve.   There is a good chance that the park could close because of capacity level crowds and the lines will be horrible.  Disney’s Hollywood StudiosDisney’s Animal Kingdom theme parks are much better choices for these days.
6.     Extra Magic Hours – (Special hours only available to Disney resort hotel guest)!  Crowds will be low enough that January (after January 3rd)  is really the only time we recommend taking in the Extra Magic Hours.   We recommend that everyone avoid the Extra Magic Hour park of the day through January 3rd.    Disney has 33,000 hotel rooms and no one goes to Disney alone – that means too many people are pointed in the same direction at the same time. You’ll have a much nicer time by going to a less busy park.  This is doubly important if you are not staying at a Disney resort – you don’t want to get to the theme park and find a bunch of Disney guests in line in front of you. 
7.      Magic Kingdom – Christmas Break.  The Magic Kingdom theme park will open at 8:00AM for Disney Resort Guests only at 8:00AM from December 24th – January 2nd.  This may create some complications for visitors who are not staying at a Disney hotel.    Be sure to arrive by 8:30AM and get a FASTPASS as soon as you’re allowed in.  Not every attraction is open during Extra Magic Hours so you’ll have the same access to many attractions as anyone else.  Use a good touring plan to help you.
8.     A good touring plan is still important during low crowds.   Shorter hours and fewer show times mean that some advance planning will make sure you and do the things that are important to you. Special Events:

1.   Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancng  Lights  (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) – November 10, 2009 – January 4, 2010.  This is an incredible holiday light display beginning around dusk.   Every 15 minutes, the display will glow and dim to correspond with the holiday music.  It is quite a sight!  No extra ticket needed – included with your park admission.
2.     Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade (Animal Kingdom)  – Offered through January 3rd.
3. Photos with “Santa Goofy” at Santa’s Chalet in Downtown Disney Marketplace.  Offered through January 3rd.  3:00 – 10:00PM.   
4. 2010 Walt Disney World Marathon.  January 7-10th.   Very popular event
5.     Celebrate Tonight – Downtown Disney’s West End Plaza.  Mini Street Parties featuring a DJ and stilt walkers lead dances, the limbo, party games, and sign-alongs.  They only last about 20 minutes each but are a lot of fun.  Sunday – Thursday:  intermittently 5:00pm– 11:00pm.  Friday – Saturday:  intermittently 6:00pm– Midnight.  Check on the hour and half hour.

 Temporary Attraction Closures and refurbishments:

  • Splash Mountain (Magic Kingdom) will be closed from January 3rd – February 27th, 2010
  • Crystal Palace Restaurant (Magic Kingdom) will be closed from January 3rd – February 15th, 2010.  During this time, character meals will be offered at Liberty Tree Tavern (Restaurant – Magic Kingdom).
  • Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon (water park) – will be closed through January 9th for its annual refurbishment.
  • Disney’s Blizzard Beach (water park) – will be closed January 10th – March 20th for its annual refurbishment.
  • Liberty Belle Riverboat is closed to guests until January 4th, 2010 due to the Tiana’ Showboat Jubilee.
  • Uzima Pool & Spa –  Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge –  will be closed from January 4th – January 29th.  Guests may use the pool at the Animal Kingdom Lodge Kidani Village area.
  • Luna Pool–  Disney’s Boardwalk Inn –  will be closed from January 18th – early February. 
  • Other refurbishments  -  January typically has a lot of pool refurbishments because the weather is cool and crowds are low. We’ll keep you posted if additional pool closures are announced.  Most resorts have more than one pool.
  • Disney’s Magical Express (Airport Shuttle Service) - New luggage procedure for late night arrivals.  As of March 30th, luggage service will no longer be available for arrivals to Orlando International Airport after 10:00PM.   Collect your luggage at baggage claim and take with you to the Disney’s Magical Express check-in desk. 

 Can You Save Money with the “Free Nights” Promotion?

Disney recently released a “free nights” promotion that includes select dates in December.   There is very limited availability for December but the savings can be significant.   Guests staying at a Disney Value resort for 5 nights can receive two additional nights free.   Guests booking a qualifying Magic Your Way package at a Disney moderate or deluxe resort for four nights can receive up to three nights stay.   Your ticket length is also increased but you still have to pay for the dining plan for those nights, if you are using a Disney Dining Plan.  Use tour online form  to contact us to book your reservation.

Walt Disney World in November – Crowd Levels, Special Events, Ride Closures, Attraction Refurbishments, and Promotions

There are some things going on at the  Walt Disney World Resort  in November that you need to know about:                                                                                                           

Crowd Warnings:

  1. Jersey Week – The New Jersey Public schools all have November 5th & 6th off for teacher-in-service days.   This has a huge impact on attendance during the first week of November as thousands of families take the opportunity to take a few extra days and head to Disneyworld.  Expect moderately high crowds for the whole first week of November.
  2. Thanksgiving Week – “Holiday Season” is even more crowded than “Peak Season” so expect very high crowd levels November 21st – 28th.   Heavy crowds can be fun because Disney extends park hours and adds extra show times but you’ll need a good touring plan to help you avoid horrible lines.
  3. Pop Warner National Football, Dance & Cheer Events at Walt Disney World – November 30 – December 12. These events take place at Disney’s Wide World of Sports and the events themselves won’t affect you but you may encounter groups of young athletes (and their families) in your resort and – during their spare time – in the theme parks.
  4. Fantasmic! (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) –This great show is no longer presented every night.  It will be offered November 1, 2, 5, 8, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 22, 25, 26, 27, 29, 30 .  This is a very popular show and we highly recommend it – arrive 60-90 minutes early, if you do not have a Fantasmic! Special Events:

  1. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party (Disney’s Magic Kingdom)- 7:00PM to Midnight – November 10, 12,  13, 15, 17, 19, 20, 29.  This special event is a lot of fun for families, with rides, a parade, shows, and fun party type events.   These nights require a special event ticket ($49 – $63  per person, depending on age and date) – you cannot enter using your Magic Your Way or Park Hopper tickets.  Ticket prices vary with an advance purchase discount offered on select nights. There are a limited number of tickets sold for each party Warning:  The Magic Kingdom will close to the public at 7:00PM on party nights.  Magic Kingdom resort area restaurants (Chef Mickey’s, 1900 Park Fare, Whispering Canyon, etc.) will fill their reservations early as people look for something nearby to enjoy after the early park closing.  Contact us today to purchase your party tickets. 
  2.   4. Candlelight Processional (Epcot) – November 27 – December 30th.  Nightly:  5:00, 6:45, & 8:00PM.   A large choir, orchestra, and celebrity narrators retell the Christmas Story in the America Gardens Theatre.  This beautiful production is extremely popular and fills to capacity.  People sometimes line up hours early.  TIP: Arrive at least 45 minutes early for the 5:00PM performance for your best chance to get in with a minimum wait.   TIP: Candlelight Processional Lunch/Dinner Packages eliminate long waits.  You have several restaurant choices and you’ll receive a voucher that guarantees seating at the Candlelight Processional.  These packages aren’t cheap but a nice meal and the wonderful Candlelight Processional are certainly a special occasion worth celebrating.  The Candlelight Processional Dinner Packages are included in the Disney Dining Plan but will take two table-service meal credits per person.  Call 407-WDW-DINE to check availability and to make reservations.

YeHaa Bob Jackson Entertains at Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort

YeeHaw Bob Jackson's Piano Sing-Along at Disney's Port Orleans Riverside ResortAre you ready to try something new on your next trip to Walt Disney World? If you’d like to do something fun without having to purchase a special ticket, check out Bob Jackson – who leads a great boogie-woogie sing-along at the River Roost Lounge in Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort.   This can be a great way to spend an evening if the weather is bad or the theme parks are just too crowded to be fun.   If you do go, please tell Bob that Steve  at Build A Better Mouse Trip told you about the show.   We really like Bob Jackson – Disney hires a lot of really great people but Bob stands out even in that high caliber group.

 

What to expect from YeeHaw Bob’s Boogie Woogie Sing-Along at the River Roost Lounge

  • Expect a tall man in brightly colored pants playing a ragtime piano and leading songs that everybody knows -  songs like Hey, Jude; Piano Man; I Got You, Babe; Sweet Caroline, and The Addams Family theme song. Bob is an energetic performer with a gift for encouraging audience participation.  
  • The atmosphere is fun and energetic. It might not appeal to the very dignified but is probably perfect for people who enjoy a good time and who don’t take themselves too seriously. You’ll get to beat your chest and yell, “Charge!” at the end of a bugle call, and you might get to do the hand-jive, or swing your arms in your best Elvis style.   Did you ever watch “Cheers” or do you have some kind of vague idea of a friendly Irish pub?   That gives you something of what to expect.
  • Bob signs autographs, poses for photos, and seems genuinely interested in every person who comes up to say hello during the intermissions.  He has quite a knack for remembering names and including people in the fun.   It doesn’t matter where you’re from, everyone in the room will yell “Me Too!”  when you name your hometown.
  • The show is family-friendly. The night I was there, there were several kids present until about the second intermission. The River Roost has a bar but I didn’t observe anyone in an intoxicated state. The wait staff are available for drink orders but there was no pressure. I recently purchased two sodas over the course of the evening and that didn’t seem to be unusual. It is probably a good idea to tip very generously if, like me, you are there for several hours. There is a no smoking policy at the River Roost.
  • Cost: no admission charge, no cover charge.
  • If you want to take the fun home with you, there are five different CD’s available for about $10 each.
  • Schedule: Bob is usually at the River Roost Lounge Tuesday through Saturday nights and plays from 8:30PM – Midnight but the schedule is subject to change. I’ve  included his current schedule at the end of this email.  
  • You do not have to stay at Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside resort to enjoy these activities. If you drive, just tell the gatekeeper that you’re going to be visiting the resort for a few hours and they’ll direct you to the visitors parking area.
  • If you are using Disney transportaton:   You can take a bus from any of the Disney theme parks to Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside resort.   The resort shares a bus with Disney’s Port Orleans – French Quarter resort so don’t get off the bus too early.  If you’re feeling unsure, ask the driver to tell you when you should exit.
  • You can also take a boat from the Downtown Disney Entertainment and Shopping district to Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside resort.

Everything you need to know to meet Tinker Bell at Pixie Hollow in Mickey’s Toontown Fair

Tips to avoid long lines when getting an autograph or your picture taken with Tinkerbell.

Can you meet Tinkerbell in person? Yes – you can meet Tinkerbell and her fairy friend at Pixie Hollow in the Mickey’s Toontown Fair area of Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park. Here’s what you need to know before you go:

For many, many years Disney said that there would never be a Tinkerbell “Meet & Greet” area for photos and autographs because…well…Tinkerbell is very tiny and people are much larger. This creates some special difficulties that have only been overcome recently. Disney solved the problem by creating a special area where Magic Kingdom theme park guests are shrunk down to fairy size, making it so much easier for fairies and humans to interact. Some say this happens by magic and others attribute it to modern technological advances. On the other hand, some skeptics suggest guests don’t really shrink and that the whole thing is it is a trick of the eye brought about by making everything in the room look bigger. I’m not an expert on shrinking technology or pixies so I’ll limit my comments to an area where I am an expert: experiencing Disney attracations without waiting in long lines!

Long lines are a huge issue at Pixie Hollow because the fairies want to make each person feel special and this takes time. Lines to meet the fairies build quickly but move slowly.

1. If you want to see Tinkerbell, you need to line up at the entrance of the “Mickey’s Toontown Fair” area of the Magic Kingdom before it opens – when the park opens at 9:00AM, “Mickey’s Toontown Fair” typically opens at 9:45 or 10:00AM. This is subject to change so check your theme park times guide as soon as you arrive. Plan to line up at the entrance by 9:35AM, at the latest.

2. You cannot take strollers through the line to see the fairies so park your stroller in the appropriate area near the “Mad Tea Party” ride (Fantasyland area). Parking your stroller before “Mickey’s Toontown Fair” opens will save valuable time when you get to Pixie Hollow.

3. Go to the left side of the crowd gathering at the entrance. You’ll be turning to the left to go into Pixie Hollow at “Mickey’s Toontown Fair” so starting out on this side of the crowd puts you at a slight advantage.

4. When Mickey’s Toontown Fair opens, a cast member (Disney employee) will direct everyone to walk at a reasonable pace (no running allowed) toward the Toontown Hall of Fame. Politely pass slow movers & be careful not to get stuck behind strollers but don’t be aggressive; there no reason to cause an injury.

5. When you arrive at the “Toontown Hall of Fame”, follow signs to Pixie Hollow and line up immediately; you can take photos outside this area when you exit. This area has two entrances – the one on the left is for the Disney Princesses and the one on the right is for the fairies. The two lines are separate so be sure you’re in line for the fairies. You can get in the princess line when you’re done with the fairies; Tinkerbell is the biggest draw right now so you definately want to do this first thing.

6 As you near the front of the line, you’ll be asked for the number of people in your party. You’ll also receive a special “Pixie PhotoPass” wristband – just in case you want to purchase the pictures taken by the Disney photographers. Then you’ll be ushered through some closed doors to the areas where you’ll be “reduced in size” for your meeting with the fairies. This process is completely painless and they promise to return you to your regular size when you leave Pixie Hollow.

7. As a courtesy to those waiting behind you, have your camera and autograph books ready. It is perfecly acceptable to ask the Disney photographer to use your personal camera to take a picture of the family or kids with the Fairies.

8. Tinker Bell is almost always available for photos and autographs and some of Tinker Bell’s fairly friends (like Iridessa and Rosetta) will also be there. On rare occasions, Tinker Bell may not be available – probably because Peter Pan needs her help for a few minutes.

9. After meeting the fairies, you’ll exit Pixie Hollow. If the Disney princesses are a priority, get in line to see them right away. You can also see Mickey Mouse nearby.

10. Lining up at Pixie Hollow as soon as Mickey’s Toontown Fair opens will mean waiting in line for 10 – 20 minutes. Check the “Waiting Time” sign when you leave – it is not uncommon to see 60 – 90 minute wait times within 15 minutes of this attraction opening and waits of up to 3 hours later in the day. Tinker Bell’s popularity also increases the waiting time at the other character Meet & Greet areas in Mickey’s Toontown Fair.

Walt Disney World in December – Crowd levels, holiday & special events, ride closures, promotions, discounts, and tips.

There are some things going on at Walt Disney World in December that you need to know about:                                                                                                           

Crowd Warnings:

  1. Crowds will be moderate in the early part of the month, although we’re already seeing very little availability at the Disney-owned resorts for certain dates.   Crowd levels will noticeably increase every day beginning around Saturday, December 19th as schools break for the holidays.  Christmas through New Years will have the heaviest crowds of the whole year with the potential for parks to close due to maximum capacity. 
  2. Pop Warner National Football, Dance & Cheer Events at Walt Disney World – November 30 – December 12. These events take place at Disney’s Wide World of Sports and the events themselves won’t affect you but you may encounter groups of young athletes (and their families) in your resort and – during their spare time – in the theme parks.
  3. Fantasmic! (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) –This great show is no longer presented every night.  It will be offered December 2, 4, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17, 18, 20, 22, 24, 25. 26, 27, 28,29, 30, 31.  This is a very popular show and we highly recommend it – arrive 60-90 minutes early, if you do not have a Fantasmic! Dinner package.  Disney may add a second, later performance on certain evenings during the winter break – if they do, the later showing of Fantasmic! will always be less crowded than the earlier one   Warning: When there are limited performances, you know Disney’s Hollywood Studios is going to be busier on days featuring a Fantasmic! show.  Afternoons will be especially busy as those with Park Hopper tickets come over to see the show.  A good touring plan will help you manage this.   Warning:  This show  is excellent but it does feature villains for a good 8-10 minutes.  The scene is fairly intense and can be frightening to small children.
  4. SpectroMagic Parade (Magic Kingdom) – This wonderful nighttime parade is not offered every night and the Magic Kingdom will be more crowded on days featuring a SpectroMagic Parade.   The SpectroMagic Parade will be presented on December 2, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19,20, 21, 22,  23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 3o, 31.    If Disney offers a second evening parade, the later parade will be less crowded than the earlier.
  5. Avoid going to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot on Christmas Day and New Years Eve.   There is a good chance that the park could close because of capacity level crowds and the lines will be horrible.  Disney’s Hollywood StudiosDisney’s Animal Kingdom theme parks are much better choices for these days.
  6. Extra Magic Hours – (Special hours only available to Disney resort hotel guest) !  We recommend that everyone avoid the Extra Magic Hour park of the day.   Disney has 33,000 hotel rooms and no one goes to Disney alone – that means too many people are pointed in the same direction at the same time. You’ll have a much nicer time by going to a less busy park.  This is doubly important if you are not staying at a Disney resort – you don’t want to get to the theme park and find a bunch of Disney guests in line in front of you. 
  7. Magic Kingdom – Christmas Break.  The Magic Kingdom will open at 8:00AM for Disney Resort Guests only at 8:00AM from December 24th – January 2nd.  This may create some complications for visitors who are not staying at a Disney hotel.    Be sure to arrive by 8:30AM and get a FASTPASS as soon as you’re allowed in.  Not every attraction is open during Extra Magic Hours so you’ll have the same access to many attractions as anyone else.  Use a good touring plan to help you.
  8. Special Events:

  1. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party (Disney’s Magic Kingdom)- 7:00PM to Midnight – December 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 18.  This special event is a lot of fun for families, with rides, a parade, shows, and fun party type events.   These nights require a special event ticket ($49 – $63  per person, depending on age and date) – you cannot enter using your Magic Your Way or Park Hopper tickets.  Ticket prices vary with an advance purchase discount offered on select nights. There are a limited number of tickets sold for each party Warning:  The Magic Kingdom will close to the public at 7:00PM on party nights.  Magic Kingdom resort area restaurants (Chef Mickey’s, 1900 Park Fare, Whispering Canyon, etc.) will fill their reservations early as people look for something nearby to enjoy after the early park closing.  Contact us today to purchase your party tickets.  
  2. Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancng  Lights  (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) – November 10, 2009 – January 4, 2010.  This is an incredible holiday light display beginning around dusk.   Every 15 minutes, the display will glow and dim to correspond with the holiday music.  It is quite a sight!  No extra ticket needed – included with your park admission.
  3. Holidays Around the World. (Epcot) – November 27 – December 30thThe World Showcase pavilions will each feature a special holiday storyteller that tells about Christmas (or other holiday) festivities in that country.  No extra ticket needed – included with your park admission.  Check your Epcot times guide.
  4. Candlelight Processional (Epcot) – November 27 – December 30th.  Nightly:  5:00, 6:45, & 8:00PM.   A large choir, orchestra, and celebrity narrators retell the Christmas Story in the America Gardens Theatre.  This beautiful production is extremely popular and fills to capacity.  People sometimes line up hours early. TIP: Arrive at least 45 minutes early for the 5:00PM performance for your best chance to get in with a minimum wait.  TIP: Candlelight Processional Lunch/Dinner Packages eliminate long waits.  You have several restaurant choices and you’ll receive a voucher that guarantees seating at the Candlelight Processional.  These packages aren’t cheap but a nice meal and the wonderful Candlelight Processional are certainly a special occasion worth celebrating.  The Candlelight Processional Dinner Packages are included in the Disney Dining Plan but will take two table-service meal credits per person.  Call 407-WDW-DINE to check availability and to make reservations.  This year’s celebrity narrators:

Celebrate Tonight – Downtown Disney’s West End Plaza.  Mini Street Parties featuring a DJ and stilt walkers lead dances, the limbo, party games, and sign-alongs.  They only last about 20 minutes each but are a lot of fun.  Sunday – Thursday:  intermittently 5:00pm– 11:00pm.  Friday – Saturday:  intermittently 6:00pm– Midnight.  Check on the hour and half hour.

Temporary Attraction Closures and refurbishments:

  • Liberty Tree Tavern (Restaurant – Magic Kingdom) the restaurant will be open but – beginning January 5th – Liberty Tree Tavern will no longer offer character dining.
  • The Magic Carpets of Aladdin (Magic Kingdom)  will be closes December 6-19, 2009.
  •  Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon (water park) – will be closed November and December for its annual refurbishment.
  • Disney’s Magical Express (Airport Shuttle Service) - New luggage procedure for late night arrivals.  As of March 30th, luggage service will no longer be available for arrivals to Orlando International Airport after 10:00PM.   Collect your luggage at baggage claim and take with you to the Disney’s Magical Express check-in desk. 

 Can You Save Money with the “Free Nights” Promotion?

Disney recently released a “free nights” promotion that includes select dates in December.   There is very limited availability for December but the savings can be significant.   Guests staying at a Disney Value resort for 5 nights can receive two additional nights free.   Guests booking a qualifying Magic Your Way package at a Disney moderate or deluxe resort for four nights can receive up to three nights stay.   Your ticket length is also increased but you still have to pay for the dining plan for those nights, if you are using a Disney Dining Plan    Did you book your reservation under the “Free Dining Promotion”?  For value & moderate resort guests, that is usually the better value.  Deluxe resort guests may save more with this promotion.    Use the online form at http://www.buildabettermousetrip.com/Ordering.php to contact us to book your reservation.

Free or Inexpensive Fun at the Walt Disney World Resort but Outside of the Theme Parks

If the crowds in the park get to be too much for you or you have some extra time, you may want to check out some of the fun and free (or low cost) activities listed below that are outside the theme parks.  

Are you staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel? Ask for your resort’s monthly Recreation Activities sheet (may not be available at every location) when you check in.   Some activities may have a fee.   You can also request the Recreation & Activities sheet for any resort you dine in or visit just to check the place out.

Boats - There are several boats throughout the resort that you can ride for free without needing a park ticket:

  • Boats run between the Magic Kingdom resorts and the Magic Kingdom theme park.
  • There is a ferry that runs between the Ticket & Transportation Center and the Magic Kingdom.
  • There is a boat that runs between the Epcot resorts and the “International Gateway” entrance to Epcot.
  • There are boats that run from Old Key West and Saratoga Springs resorts to Downtown Disney.
  • There are boats that run from Port Orleans Riverside and Port Orleans French Quarter resorts to Downtown Disney.
  • During certain hours, there may be a boat that goes between the two sides of Downtown Disney.

Monorails – no park ticket required:

  • The resort Monorail runs between Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Contemporary Resorts and the Magic Kingdom and Ticket & Transportation Center.
  • The Express monorails between the Magic Kingdom and the Ticket & Transportation Center.
  • The Epcot monorail runs between the Ticket & Transportation Center and Epcot.

Recommended routes:

  1. Park the car at – or take a Disney Bus to –  Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.   Go through the resort, past the pool and see the artificial geyser go off on the ½ hour during daylight hours.  Afterwards, head to the boat dock.
  2. Option 1: Shorter boat ride – take the boat to the Magic Kingdom.   Option 2:  Longer boat ride – Take the boat that goes to the Ft. Wilderness Campground and the Contemporary resort.  Exit at either the Magic Kingdom or Contemporary resort, depending on which boat you rode.
  3. Ride the Monorail to the Ticket & Transportation Center.   Ask to sit in the front (limit- 4 people).  You may have to wait for the next monorail to get into the front.
  4. From the Ticket and Transportation Center – take the Ferry Boat to the Magic Kingdom.  If you used the Disney bus system, you may want to catch your resort bus here.
  5. If you drove – from the Magic Kingdom,  take the water launch back to the Wilderness Lodge to return to  your car.

Electric Water Pageant:  – this nightly floating parade can be seen from the Magic Kingdom area resorts.  My favorite is to watch from the beach at the Polynesian Resort.    I like to get a Dole Whip (Pineapple soft-serve ice-cream type dessert) from Captain Cooks, (the resort’s food court) to take with me to watch.   Typical times:

  • 9:00PM – Floats past the Polynesian Resort
  • 9:15PM – Floats past the Grand Floridian Resort
  • 9:35PM – Floats past the Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
  • 9:45PM – Floats past the Ft. Wilderness Campground boat dock
  • 10:05PM – Floats past the Contemporary Resort.
  • These times may be adjusted slightly depending on when there are fireworks at the Magic Kingdom.  The Polynesian Resort beach area is a great place to watch the fireworks too.

Campfire Sing-Along with Chip & Dale at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground  – You’ll have to park the car and take the campground’s internal bus system to the Meadow Recreation Area for this event. 

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground also has a  horse drawn wagon ride every evening – there is a fee for this.

Many other resorts have outdoor/poolside movies – check the resort activity sheet for dates and times.

Animal Kingdom Lodge – this resort has its own Animal viewing area.  Just pass through the resort to the other side to see the animals.  There are two fire pits – one indoors and one outdoors.  They have a nightly story time at the fire pit – ask for the scheduled time when you arrive.

YeeHaw Bob at Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort.   Bob Jacksowagn is a very fun performer who leads a boogy-woogie, rag-time sing-along at the River Roost Lounge in the Port Orleans Riverside resort.  This event is family friendly.   He typically performs on Wednesday – Saturday nights.

Downtown Disney

  • See the Lego Store sculptures – they always impress us. 
  • The Characters in Flight balloon is neat to see, even if you don’t ride it.  It’s very pretty at night.  
  • You can sometimes take a boat from one side of Downtown Disney to the other.    You can also ride a boat from the Market Place Area to Old Key West & Saratoga Springs or to Port Orleans Riverside and Port Orleans French Quarter resorts.  
  • Celebrate Tonight –  Downtown Disney’s West End Plaza.  Mini-street party with fun dance parties, limbo, stilt walkers, etc.   These occur Sunday – Thursday from 5:00pm – 11:00pm.   Friday & Saturday from 6:00PM – Midnight.  They do have periodic breaks through the evening so check back if there’s nothing going on the first time you pass by.

Tips for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort

Pre-party planning information:

  1. 2009 Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party dates:  September 4, 11, 15, 18, 22, 25, 29, October 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13, 15, 18, 20, 22, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, and November 1.  The abbreviation for this party is MNSSHP.
  2. You must have a ticket specifically for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party to participate in this special event.  You cannot enter using a Magic Your Way or Park Hopper ticket.  The Magic Kingdom will close to the general public at 7:00PM; after that time, only those who have the party wrist band will be allowed to ride rides.   Most nights have advance purchase discount that saves $7 per ticket (Prices include tax: Adults – $55.38;  Children 3 – 9 $48.99); there is no advance purchase discount for October 9. 15, 23, 31.   Day of event ticket prices (subject to availability) including tax: Adults – $62.84; Children 3 – 9 $56.45 – except Halloween Night (October 31st) when prices are Adults – $68.16;  Children 3 – 9 $61.77, including sales tax.  Disney Annual Passholders and Disney Vacation Club members receive special discounts on tickets for these party nights:  September 4, 11, 15, 18, 22, 25, 29.   3. Parties on weekends tend to be a busier than parties on week days.   The October 31st party typically sells out in advance.  There are a limited number of tickets available for each party so you do not have to worry about feeling packed in.
  4. You do not have to spend the day at the Magic Kingdom if you have a Magic Your Way basic ticket and want to visit a Disney theme park prior to the party.  Because this event is ticketed separately, it is not attached to your regular admission ticket in any way so you are not “park hopping” if you go to Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, or the Animal Kingdom using your regular admission ticket on the same day that you go to the party.
  5. The party is from 7:00PM to Midnight but your party ticket will allow you to enter the Magic Kingdom as early at 4:00PM.   This is a great thing because you can get your party wrist band, go into the Magic Kingdom, and maybe get some dinner before the party starts.  The parking area and front gate of the Magic Kingdom are going to be a little crazy right at 7:00PM as you have day guests exiting at the same time that party guests are trying to enter.   Be sure to get a party map when you get your wrist band.
  6. On the other hand, there are some people like to wait until a little after 7:00PM to enter because the special party affects that are added along Main Street USA once the party starts (7:00PM)  heighten the party mood and experience for them.
  7. If you are spending the whole day in the Magic Kingdom, you’ll need to go to the Rose Garden on the Hub to pick your party wrist band.
  8. Try not to wear yourself out prior to the party – this is especially true for young children.   You’re paying a premium for these event tickets so it doesn’t make sense to be nearly worn out when the party begins at 7:00PM.   We recommend sleeping in this morning and enjoying a resort day or enjoying a late character breakfast at one of the resort restaurants. Another good option is to sleep in and make this a water park day.  If you do go into one of the parks, avoid the morning Extra Magic Hour and try to get a mid-day break.
  9. Costumes:  both adults and children are allowed to wear “family friendly” costumes to these fun parties – in fact, this is the only time that adults are allowed to wear costumes into a theme park.  Florida can be hot and humid so select costumes that will be comfortable and allows you to move freely.  You may not wear masks or head pieces that obstruct your vision.  Adults who dress in realistic looking Disney character costumes are not allowed to pose for photos or sign autographs or do anything to imply that you are a Disney employee; doing so can cause you to be escorted from the park.   You are not required to wear a costume to the party.
  10. Costumes - Booking a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or “Pirate League” reservation before the party seems like a fun and easy way to get ready for the party.   You won’t be the only one to take advantage of this option and the appointments get backed up, getting done much later than expected.   Try to book a reservation early enough to be finished well before the party starts.  Remember that you can only enter the Magic Kingdom at 4:00PM with just a party ticket – that may affect your Pirate or Princess make-over time.  There is a “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique” in the World of Disney shop at Downtown Disney.
  11. Disney provides small plastic trick-or-treat bags but many people bring at least one larger sturdy (canvas?) bag with handles / shoulder straps for candy – especially if the parent will end up carrying candy for more than one child.   There are candy stops all over the park but think about how much room you have for candy in your luggage.  
  12. Dining –  Plan to eat a decent dinner – you might feel sick if you eat only candy all evening.  There will be some restaurants open during the party.   Remember that Magic Kingdom resort area restaurants (Chef Mickey’s, Ohana, etc.) will be especially busy these nights as day guests look for something to do after the early park closing.   Cinderella’s Royal Table, Liberty Tree Tavern, and Tony’s Town Square are the table-service restaurants that are open during the party – but you need to decide whether spending about 1 ½ hours in a restaurant is worthwhile when the party is only 5 hours long.  Cosmic Rays, Casey’s Hot dogs, and Pecos Bills are the counter-service restaurants serving meals.  There will be some other snack carts and ice cream shops open.  You can also utilize the food courts at the Magic Kingdom Area Resorts; we like the Contempo Café in the Contemporary resort because you can watch the monorail zip by while you eat – then just walk or take the water launch over to the Magic Kingdom for the party.
  13. You might be able to buy glow necklaces at your local party supply store or even the party section of your local Wal-mart.  These will be less expensive than similar flashy items found inside the park.

At Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party:

  1. When you get the party map, take a minute to decide which shows or events are important to you and decide when you will do activities that have more than one time available. 
  2. If you’re staying late, remember that the second parade (10:30PM) is always less crowded than the earlier parade (8:15PM).   You’ll want to find a parade viewing location at least 20 minutes prior to the parade so that you can see the headless horseman ride by.   TIP: If you do encounter crowds along the parade route, look for a garbage can.  People tend to avoid them but the Disney garbage cans are very clean and do not smell – you might be able to find a little space near one to watch the parade.
  3. Don’t line up early at a candy / trick-or-treat stops.   There will be candy available all over the park, all night long.  You don’t need a strategy for getting candy.   The character paths are fun places to get candy.
  4. Sugar free candy is available at the City Hall.
  5. There are no FASTPASS tickets distributed at the party – crowds are low enough that FASTPASS tickets are not really necessary.
  6. These rides are open during the party:  Adventureland: Swiss Family Treehouse, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Magic Carpets of Aladdin.   Frontierland: Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railway.  Liberty Square:  Haunted Mansion, The Hall of Presidents.  Fantasyland:  Peter Pan’s Flight, Cinderella’s Golden Carousel, Dumbo the Flying Elephant,  Mickey’s Philharmagic, Snow White’s Scary Adventures, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Mad Tea Party, and “it’s a small world”.  Tomorrowland: Tomorrowland Speedway, AStro Orbiter, Buzz LIghtyear’s Space Ranger Spin, Tommorowland Transit Authority, Stitch’s Great Escape, Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor (closes at 10PM),   Mickey’s Toontown Fair:  The Barnstormer at Goofy’s Wiseacre Farm.
  7. The Get Up and Boo-gie dance party at Ariel’s Grotto in Fantasy Land is generally geared towards little kids while the Rock-It OutStitch’s Club 626 Dance Party in Tomorrowland may have Cha Cha slide” or “Cupid shuffle” type dances that’ll be fun for older dancers.
  8. Do you want party t-shirts or souvenirs?   Your party map will have a symbol indicating areas where Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party logo items can be purchased.  Shop early for t-shirts as they may not replenish the racks throughout the evening.
  9. The Happy Hallowishes Fireworks are usually presented at 9:30PM.
  10. Free face painting is offered (check in Toontown) but the lines can get long but move quickly.  There will be a board letting you know what types of designs they can do.  The styles will be fairly simple so that they can get people done in a timely manner.
  11.  A lot of families with small children will exit after the Happy Hallowishes Fireworks (9:30PM) and ride lines typically decrease as the evening gets later.  
  12. There will be photopass photographers on hand for the party.   You can get a 40% discount on Party photo prints when you use the special discount code on the back of the party Photopass card.

Characters: Is seeing characters a priority?   This is where you need a strategy because the lines get long.  

  1. Does your little princess want her picture taken in front of Cinderella’s Coach?  This should be the first thing you do because the line gets brutally long.  The coach is in the Fantasyland Stroller parking area near to “it’s a small world”.
  2. Snow White and seven dwarfs are also very popular so plan to line up early to see them.
  3. Is there a long line in front of the character you want to see?   Ask the handler (the Disney cast member standing near the character) when they’ll go on break and when they’ll return – then line up about 5 – 10 minutes prior to the scheduled return.
  4. The dance parties are great opportunities to interact with the characters.
  5. If it is open, people tend to overlook the character meet & greet area in Adventure Land in the room near the Aloha Isle snack shop.
  6. Villains are always VERY popular at these parties so they generally don’t sign autographs – it would just take too long.  You can snap photos though.   They generally stick around the castle forecourt area for awhile after the Villains Mix & Mingle show – this is a great time to see them.    Their Meet & Greet timesa are 7:45, 9:00, 10:05, & 11:15PM.
  7. Parade characters can usually be seen in front to the castle, after the parade.

Examples of Trick-or-Treat sized candy given at past parties:  Smarties, dum dums, SweetTarts, Tootsie Rolls, Airheads, Bottle Caps, Mike & Ikes, Bit ‘o Honey, Jolly Rancher, Nerds, Skittles, Candy Corn, Twix, red licorice, Laffy Taffy, 100 Grand Bars, Crunch Bars, Snickers, Hershey bars, M&Ms, Kit Kat bars, Oh Henry bars, Starburst, Now & Later, Twizzlers, etc.

Walt Disney World in October – Ride closures, crowd levels, special events & promotions

There are some things going on at Walt Disney World in October 2009 that you need to know about:                                                                                                           

Crowd Warnings:

1.   Free Dining Promotion – Other than Columbus Day weekend, October is a moderate  crowd time at Walt Disney World – they wouldn’t offer the “free dining promotion”, if it was going to be super busy.   But you will have a lot of competition at the sit-down restaurants; especially the most popular locations like Chef Mickey’s, Cinderella’s Royal Table, LeCellier, etc.  Make your dining reservations as soon as you are eligible.   Warning: Fantasmic Dinner Packages will probably completely fill the first day that they’re offered.  At this time, dining reservations can be booked 90 days prior to your arrival.

2.     Columbus Day Weekend – three day weekends always bump the crowds up a little bit and the free dining promotion will tempt parents to pull the kids out of school for a fall family adventure.  Expect the crowds to be busier than usual on October 10 -12th.

3.  Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival ~ September 25 – November 8, 2009.   This event is included with regular theme park admission; there a few special events related to this festival that have a separate admission fee. The Epcot Food & Wine Festival is very popular as chefs and winemakers from around the world set up booths where you can savor the wonderful flavors offered offered for sale.   There will be food & wine themed demonstrations as well.  You typically can use your Disney Dining Plan meal and snack credits at this event – in fact, many people “hoard” their snack credits just for this event.  Warning: This event is very, very popular.  Expect Epcot to be busier than usual on weekends as locals and annual passholders come to enjoy the festival.  TIP: Monday is always a great day to visit Epcot.  

4.  Fantasmic! (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) –This great show is no longer presented every night.  It will be offered October 1, 4, 8, 11, 13, 15, 19, 22, 26, 29, 30, 31.  This is a very popular show and we highly recommend it – arrive at least 60 minutes early, if you do not have a Fantasmic! Dinner package.   Warning: When there are limited performances, you know Disney’s Hollywood Studios is going to be busier on days featuring a Fantasmic! show.  Afternoons will be especially busy as those with Park Hopper tickets come over to see the show.  A good touring plan will help you manage this.   Warning:  This show  is excellent but it does feature villains for a good 8-10 minutes.  The scene is fairly intense and can be frightening to small children.

5.  SpectroMagic Parade (Magic Kingdom) – This wonderful nighttime parade is not offered every night and the Magic Kingdom will be more crowded on days featuring a SpectroMagic Parade.   The SpectroMagic Parade will be presented on October 3, 5, 7,10, 11, 14, 16, 17, 19,21, 24, 26, 28, 3o.  TIP: Avoid going to the Magic Kingdom on October 11, 19, 26 – the combination of the Evening Extra Magic Hour (the park stays open an extra 3 hours for Disney hotel guests) along with the SpectroMagic Parade will make this park disproportionately busier than the other Disney theme parks.

6.  Extra Magic Hours – (Special hours only available to Disney resort hotel guest) !  We recommend that everyone avoid the Extra Magic Hour park of the day.   Disney has 33,000 hotel rooms and no one goes to Disney alone – that means too many people are pointed in the same direction at the same time. You’ll have a much nicer time by going to a less busy park.  This is doubly important if you are not staying at a Disney resort – you don’t want to get to the theme park and find a bunch of Disney guests in line in front of you.

Special Events:

1.   Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party (Disney’s Magic Kingdom)- 7:00PM to Midnight – October 1, 2, 6, 9, 12, 13, 15, 18, 20, 22, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31.  This special event is a lot of fun for families, with rides, trick-or-treating, and fun party type events.   These nights require a special event ticket – you cannot enter using your Magic Your Way or Park Hopper tickets.  Ticket prices vary with an advance purchase discount offered on select nights. There are a limited  TIP: A lot of children dress up for this event but select costumes that will let your kids comfortably enjoy the rides and attractions – remember that October can still be quite warm in Orlando.     Warning:  The Magic Kingdom will close to the public at 7:00PM on party nights.  Magic Kingdom resort area restaurants (Chef Mickey’s, 1900 Park Fare, Whispering Canyon, etc.) will fill their reservations early as people look for something nearby to enjoy after the early park closing.  For more information see: http://buildabettermousetrip.wordpress.com/2009/05/02/mickeys-not-so-scary-halloween-party-tickets-on-sale-now/

2.  October 11thDisney’s Race for the Taste 10K & 3 K run. (Epcot & Disney’s Hollywood Studios™)  This event begins at 7:00AM and shouldn’t have a big impact on overall crowd levels but you may prefer to visit Epcot on a weekday.  

3.  October 17thOrlando International Dragon Boat Festival (Downtown Disney) Races will run from approximately 9:00AM – 5:30PM. 4.  October 24th – The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ 13K & 5K run.  Nighttime race occurs after park hours and won’t affect overall crowd levels.

5.  Celebrate Tonight – Downtown Disney’s West End Plaza.  Mini Street Parties featuring a DJ and stilt walkers lead dances, the limbo, party games, and sign-alongs.  They only last about 20 minutes each but are a lot of fun.  Sunday – Thursday:  intermittently 5:00pm– 11:00pm.  Friday – Saturday:  intermittently 6:00pm– Midnight.  Check on the hour and half hour.

6.  DIANA – The People’s Princess – Downtown Disney.  A 17,500 sq. ft. special exhibit of dresses and artifacts from the life of Princess Diana.   Now through November 30th, 2009.  Tickets available at the exhibit:  Ages 10 & older – $14.50 each / ages 3- 9 – $5.00 each.  Hours:  11:00AM – 11:00PM.

Temporary Attraction Closures and refurbishments:

  • Liberty Tree Tavern (Restaurant – Magic Kingdom) the restaurant will be open but – beginning January 5th – Liberty Tree Tavern will no longer offer character dining.
  • Space Mountain (Magic Kingdom) will be closed until November 21, 2009.
  • Tomorrowland Light & Power Co.  (Arcade – Magic Kingdom) will be closed until November 21, 2009.
  • Flights of Wonder (Bird Show – Animal Kingdom) will be closed from September 13 – October 23rd.
  • Living with the Land (Epcot) will be closed until November 1, 2009.
  • Disney’s Osprey Ridge Golf Course – closed October 22 – 31st for aerification.
  • Disney’s Magical Express (Airport Shuttle Service) - New luggage procedure for late night arrivals.  As of March 30th, luggage service will no longer be available for arrivals to Orlando International Airport after 10:00PM.   Collect your luggage at baggage claim and take with you to the Disney’s Magical Express check-in desk. 

 Can You Save Money with the Fall Free Dining Promotion

Disney released a free dining promotion that goes into December.   This is the first time we’ve seen this offered to the general public for the fall season and it can be a tremendous savings.   Guests booking a qualifying Magic Your Way package with a stay at the Disney value resorts receive the Disney Quick-Service dining plan at no additional cost.   Guests booking a qualifying Magic Your Way package at a Disney moderate or deluxe resort receive the Standard/Plus dining plan at no additional cost.   This can easily save a family of four over $100 per night of stay.    These must be booked by September 26th and are subject to availability so contact us right away to book your package.   Use the online form at http://www.buildabettermousetrip.com/Ordering.php

2009 Candlelight Processional Lunch & Dinner Packages Now Available

Holidays at Walt Disney World Resort – Candlelight Processional
November 27 – December 30, 2009 at the Epcot Theme Park

Revel in the joy of the season as you listen to an unforgettable retelling of the Christmas story by a celebrity narrator accompanied by a 50-piece orchestra and mass choir. Performances are at the American Gardens Theatre in the America (USA) Pavilion in the Epcot World Showcase.

Performances take place each evening at 5:00pm, 6:45pm and 8:15pm

 This is a much loved holiday event at Disneyworld and the shows nearly always fill to capacity, with people lining up even hours early to get a seat.   

TIP:  For the shortest wait, plan to see the 5:00PM performance – if you are not booking a Candlelight Processional Lunch or Dinner Package (information below).  You will probably need to line up 45 – 60 minutes early for this performance.  Later performances will have longer waits.

 Candlelight Processional Lunch & Dinner Packages

You can avoid the long wait by booking a Candlelight Processional Dinner Package.   The Candlelight Processional Dinner Package allows you to dine at one of several Epcot restaurants prior to the performance and then you’ll receive a voucher allowing you to bypass the long line.   The restaurants are grouped into three different price tiers – this does not affect you if you are using the Standard/Plus or Deluxe Disney Dining Plans but may be a consideration if you are paying out of pocket.  There are a very limited number of these packages available so you need to book early.

IMPORTANT ~ New policy for 2009:  The Candlelight Processional Dining Packages are now considered a Signature Dining Experience and will require 2 Disney Dining Plan table service credits per person age 3 or older.

Tier 1 Restaurants – Candlelight Processional  Lunch and Dinner Package:

  • Biergarten Restaurant (Germany Pavilion) 
  • Garden Grill Character Dinner (Land Pavilion  – not available for lunch)

Lunch Price (see the 5:00PM performance):  $32.99 Age 10 – Adult / $17.99 per child age 3 – 9.

Note:  Prices exclude tax and gratuity.   Lobster entrée is also excluded from this package.   I don’t know why the child’s price is so much higher for Tier 1 but I double-checked the information; it may be because the Garden Grill is the only character dining option for this package. 

TIP:   You can save money by booking a dining package for the 5:00PM performance.  You’ll  enjoy a late lunch with reservations  typically booked between 1:45 & 2:30PM.  Please note that the Garden Grill is not open for lunch.   The 5:00PM performance is wonderful but please note that this is dusk and not quite dark which might detract from the performance a bit for some people.

TIP:  If you want to enjoy IllumiNations (fireworks) that same night, you’ll probably want a 5:00 or 6:45PM seating.  The 8:15PM performance will make it difficult to find a spot for the fireworks.

Reservations can (and should be) booked up to 90 days prior to arrival.   If you are not on a Disney Dining Plan, you will have to pay for the meal with a credit card at the time of booking but this is refundable up to 72 hours prior to the reservation.    If you are on a Disney Dining Package, a credit card number will be required to confirm the reservation; nothing will be charged to the credit card unless you are a “no show”.

WARNING:  This show really does draw lines and crowds through the evening hours.  You’ll want to tour the Italy, America, Japan, Morocco, and France Pavilions earlier in the afternoon to avoid the congested walkways and crowds.
