Reel Pirates & Real Pirates…Learn a bit about Blackbeard

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is out in theatres now so I thought I should pass on some great information about the real pirate in the midst of the our much loved Disney pirates.

Okay – so, we know that Captain Jack Sparrow is a fictional pirate, right?

And you also new that Barbossa is a fictional pirate too, right? (Did you know that Barbossa’s first name is Hector?)

And Blackbeard is also a fictional pirate, right?   Wrong!  Blackbeard was as real as you and me and probably even more scary than his character in the Pirates of the Caribbean.   You can read a quick history of the real Blackbeard here:

I got to visit the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum recently and learned several things about Blackbeard – for example, did you know that he’s thought to have had 14 common law wives?

You can read this in the link above but did you know that Blackbeard was a master of psychological warfare?  He would totally freak people out with his appearance…he had that beard and that wild hair and he’d wear a shoulder sling with six pairs of pistols, he’d tuck a cutlass and dagger into his belt.  Then, here’s the weirdest/coolest thing of all…he’d put slow-burning matches in his hair, under his hat, causing a haze of smoke around his head – making folks think they were being attacked by the devil himself.   I was more than a little disappointed that Disney didn’t include that as one of the movie affects!

If you’re interested in pirates, you really should take some time to see the St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure museum – it’s very well done and a lot of fun.   But even if you aren’t going to be in Florida anytime soon, there is alot of great information about real pirates to be found on their website:

And don’t forget that you can find out about Disney pirates on our website at
